The Calloway County Lady Lakers dropped a nail biter to Ballard Memorial 63-61 in an opening round game in the City of Metropolis Girls Basketball tournament. The game turned on two things - free throws and rebounding. Ballard shot 30 free throws to Calloway's nine and they outrebounded the Lady Lakers 41-27.

Calloway held an 11 point lead midway through the third quarter but the spurt that gave them the lead was followed by a stretch in which it seemed that a foul was called on the Lady Lakers on every trip down the floor. Ballard was in the double bonus by the end of the third quarter and Calloway's lead was down to three points.

The Lady Lakers were led in scoring by Taylor Futrell with 17 points. Averee Fields had 16, Karlee Wilson had 12, and Abby Futrell had six. Alyssa Cunningham, Shauna Wicker, Cheyenne Maddox and Morgan Smotherman each had two.

Ballard was paced by Candice Bryant and Abby Shelly who each had 19 points. Abbie Denton had eight. Tisha Burgess and Brandi Jones each had five which Tiffani Hatley and Karen Plivick both had three.

The Lady Lakers play Marion in the second round of the tournament on Tuesday at 6:30. The game can be heard live on 89.7 FM.
