The Calloway County Lady Lakers rolled past Marion tonight 58-23 in a second round game of the City of Metropolis Girl's Tournament. The Lady Lakers jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the first quarter and were never threatened.
Calloway hit 46 percent of their field goal attempts and 33 percent of their three-point attempts while hold Marion to 27 percent and 0 percent respectively. Calloway committed just five turnovers while forcing Marion into 24 miscues.
The Lady Lakers were led in scoring by Averee Fields with 18 points. Taylor Futrell and Karlee Wilson each had 12. Morgan Smotherman had seven, Abby Futrell had four, Shauna Wicker had three, Lauren Benson had two and Alyssa Cunningham had one.
Marion was paced by Lindsay Lenon with 12 points. Amanda Crump had four. Michelle Lazorchak, Brittany Rooney and Savannah Howard each had two points. Mallorie Chamness had one.
Averee Fields, Taylor Futrell and Karlee Wilson are all playing well so far. Fields is a high-major talent who can dominate a game without scoring, Futrell is getting a lot of baskets in transition, and Wilson has been making shots from the perimeter. But the real surprise to me has been Morgan Smotherman. She is beating defenders off the dribble and proved tonight that she can shoot from beyond the arc. By the end of the season she may make a major impact.
