The Calloway County Lakers defeated Hopkins Central in
Morton's Gap last night 28-21 creating a three way tie for first place in the
4-A first district between Calloway, Lone Oak, and Hopkins Central at 2-1. The
Lakers will get the top seed in the playoffs as the tie will be broken based
on strength of schedule. They will likely host Russell County in the first round
of the playoffs.
The Lakers score first but Hopkins Central led at halftime 21-7 as the result of a couple of big plays: a 66 yard touchdown run by Jacob Powell and a 46 yard touchdown run by Troy Rorer. Calloway shut the Storm out in the second half though while scoring three touchdowns of their own.
Tyrell Willis led Calloway with 70 yards rushing on 20 carries and with two touchdowns while Casey Brockman completed 14 of 24 passes for 175 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Chris Dobbins had six catches for 77 yards and one touchdown while George Garner had three catches for 44 yards and one touchdown.
Austin Hargrove had two interceptions for the Lakers and Michael Treadway had three sacks as they keyed the defense along with linebacker Willis. Willis made his presence felt even when he didn't get credit for a tackle because he applied constant pressure and forced the Storm to run away from him.
Hopkins Central quarterback Jacob Powell was hurt at the beginning of the fourth quarter returning a punt and missed the rest of the game. After he left the Storm was ineffective on offense and the center snapped the ball over his replacement's head twice because the second string quarterback, Jesse Almon was four inches shorter than Powell.
But by the time Powell got hurt the Lakers had already turned the game around, putting two touchdowns on the board while they stymied Powell and the rest of the Storm.
Next up for Calloway is a visit from Fulton County.
